Kilambakkam to Get New Police District Under Tambaram Commissionerate
Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Thursday, September 3, 2026, announced in the Assembly the creation of a new police district in Kilambakkam under the Tambaram Police Commissionerate. The restructuring is aimed at ensuring the maintenance of law and order, public safety, and traffic control in the rapidly expanding area.
According to the announcement, the operational landscape around Kilambakkam has expanded rapidly following the opening of the Kilambakkam Bus Terminus. The resulting surge in movement and development necessitated an increased administrative and enforcement focus on law and order as well as traffic management across the locality.
To accommodate the growth, existing law and order police districts and sub-divisions functioning under the Tambaram Police Commissionerate will be reorganised. As part of this jurisdictional restructuring, the Guduvanchery sub-division will be bifurcated to form the newly designated Kilambakkam police sub-division.
Alongside the changes in Tambaram, Mr. Vijay announced the creation of the Poonamallee police district through the bifurcation of the Avadi Police District. Furthermore, the Poonamallee police sub-division will be bifurcated to form the Thirumazhisai police sub-division, driven by rapid urbanisation and population growth under the Avadi Commissionerate that required continuous monitoring of public safety and law and order.
In an additional measure for police administration, Mr. Vijay stated that conservancy services for the Police Department will be outsourced to ensure proper hygiene and clean working environments for personnel. The state has earmarked an annual allocation of ₹60 crore for this sanitation initiative.
The Chief Minister also announced that women firefighters would be recruited into the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services to empower women and provide equal opportunities on the frontline, particularly for specialised rescues involving women and children. In addition, the post designation of fireman will be officially renamed as firefighter.
Finally, six new fire stations will be established in Porur, Sengipatti, Ayothiyapattinam, Ponerikarai, Thirupuvanam, and Vadamadurai at ₹16 crore, and new buildings will be built for ₹65.90 crore for 15 stations, including J.J. Nagar, Maduravoyal, and Koyambedu. Uniform allowances up to Additional Director will be equalised with the police at ₹3.77 crore, while Pongal Day Chief Minister’s Fire Service Medals will double from 120 to 240, with cash stipends rising from ₹400 to ₹500.
