Chennai Police Head Constable Arrested in Kolathur for Raping Stepdaughter
A head constable attached to the Greater Chennai Police (GCP) was arrested on Monday in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, by the Kolathur All Women Police for allegedly raping his stepdaughter on multiple occasions over the past three years. The accused policeman had allegedly issued death threats against the survivor's mother to keep the sexual abuse hidden, warning the victim that he would kill her mother if she disclosed the abuse.
According to the Kolathur All Women Police, the accused married the survivor’s mother in 2012 following a separation from his first wife. His second wife entered the marriage with two children—a daughter and a son—from her previous marriage.
Investigators stated that the abuse began after the stepfather discovered the young woman's personal life. In her formal complaint lodged with the police, the survivor stated that in 2023, her stepfather learnt about an online relationship she had formed with an individual she had met through social media.
The accused officer allegedly insisted that she break off the relationship immediately. Following that confrontation, he began sexually assaulting and raping her when she was 18 years old.
The survivor, who is now 21 years of age, stated that the sexual assaults continued over a span of three years. Throughout this entire period, the Greater Chennai Police head constable repeatedly threatened her, stating that he would murder her mother if she disclosed the sexual abuse to anyone.
Following her complaint and a subsequent inquiry, the Kolathur All Women Police registered a criminal case against the head constable under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The accused policeman was formally placed under arrest on Monday.
Authorities confirmed that the survivor is currently receiving medical care. Speaking about her condition, a police officer told TNIE: "Currently, the survivor is under treatment. She will be sent for a medical check-up and counselling related to the case on Tuesday."
Further investigation into the sexual assault case is currently under way.
