IIT Madras Global Research Foundation Plans to Open Over Five Centres in US, UK and UAE

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is planning to significantly expand its international footprint by establishing more than five global centres across major international markets. The new overseas offices, which will include locations in the United States, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates, are designed to extend the academic and research ecosystem of the premier institution far beyond its home campus.

According to Thirumalai Madhavnarayan, the chief executive officer and director of the IIT Madras Global Research Foundation (IIT-M Global), the primary objective of this international expansion is to support deep-tech startups. The foundation plans to begin its operations by working with a curated group of approximately 50 deep-tech startups, helping them gain entry into new foreign markets, secure international funding, and build strategic corporate partnerships.

This global push follows the institute's initial success in deep-tech incubation within India. By setting up physical centres in key global regions, IIT-M Global aims to provide a launchpad for startups to scale their operations internationally. The move represents a major step in taking the institute's locally developed innovations to a global audience.

In addition to supporting startups, the new centres will play a crucial role in commercialising the intellectual properties (IPs) generated by researchers at IIT Madras. Madhavnarayan noted that the foundation is already witnessing substantial traction and interest in the institute's intellectual properties from various international entities. This global interest is particularly concentrated across three key areas: the energy sector, the marine sector, and the space sector.

Through the establishment of these new international hubs, IIT-M Global seeks to bridge the gap between academic research and commercial opportunities worldwide. The expansion is expected to foster stronger ties between Indian innovators and global industries, ensuring that the technologies developed at IIT Madras find practical applications on a global scale.
