Chennai Electric Two-Wheeler Sales Surge in May as Market Share Approaches 10 Percent

Electric two-wheeler registrations in Chennai and across India surged in May 2026, bringing the segment's market penetration to approximately 9 percent and putting it on track to hit double digits. This rapid growth in the two-wheeler market highlights an accelerating shift toward electric mobility among local commuters, including those in neighborhoods like T Nagar, amid rising petrol costs.

According to Vahan data, total registrations for battery electric vehicles across all vehicle segments reached 2.64 lakh units in May 2026. This figure marks an increase from the 2.51 lakh units registered in April 2026, as well as a significant rise from the 1.96 lakh units recorded in May 2025.

Electric two-wheelers made up the largest portion of these sales, accounting for roughly 63 percent of all electric vehicle registrations in May. The segment saw 1.66 lakh units registered during the month, representing a 6 percent sequential increase from April's 1.57 lakh units and a 58 percent year-on-year jump from the 1.05 lakh units registered in May 2025.

Industry experts attribute the rising demand to multiple economic and geopolitical factors. Poonam Upadhyay, Director at Crisil Ratings, noted that the electric two-wheeler segment has benefited from lower running costs compared to traditional petrol vehicles. Additionally, ongoing uncertainty surrounding fuel prices and concerns over fuel availability stemming from the West Asia conflict have made electric mobility more appealing to consumers.

Market penetration for electric two-wheelers previously peaked at a record 9.8 percent in March 2026 before dropping to 8 percent in April. With May's rebound to around 9 percent, analysts expect the segment's market share to cross into double digits as early as June. Upadhyay also highlighted that established manufacturers are gaining a stronger foothold because their extensive distribution and service networks reassure buyers regarding after-sales support.

Other electric vehicle segments showed mixed results in May 2026. Electric three-wheelers recorded strong growth with 70,150 registrations, making it the second-best month of the year for the segment and exceeding the prior three-month average of 65,236 units.

Conversely, the electric passenger vehicle segment, which includes electric cars and utility vehicles, experienced a minor decline. Registrations in this category fell slightly to 25,460 units in May, down from the 25,921 units registered in April.
