Electric Two-Wheeler Registrations Rise to 1.66 Lakh Units in May

Battery electric vehicle (EV) registrations in Chennai's T Nagar neighborhood and across the country accelerated in May 2026, driven by sustained demand and an increase in fuel prices announced during the final week of the month. The market's growth was led by the electric two-wheeler segment, which is now on track to reach double-digit market penetration in the coming months.

According to official Vahan data, total electric vehicle registrations across all segments rose to 2.64 lakh units in May 2026. This figure represents an increase from the 2.51 lakh units recorded in April 2026, as well as a significant rise from the 1.96 lakh units registered in May 2025. The positive momentum in May followed an active April, which defied the typical post-March slowdown.

Electric two-wheelers continue to make up the bulk of all electric vehicle sales. In May 2026, registrations for electric two-wheelers grew by 6 percent sequentially compared to April 2026. The segment also achieved a 58 percent year-on-year growth compared to the same month in the previous year.

In terms of overall volume, electric two-wheeler registrations reached 1.66 lakh units in May 2026. This is an increase from the 1.57 lakh units registered in April 2026, and a substantial jump from the 1.05 lakh units recorded in May 2025.

This steady growth indicates that electric two-wheeler penetration is rapidly nearing a key milestone, with market share expected to enter double-digit territory in the near future.
