Congress Backs Assembly Resolution on Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu

Congress Minister Viswanathan extended his full support in the Tamil Nadu Assembly in Chennai on Monday to a special resolution moved by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. The resolution proposes making 'Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu' the official opening song at all State government functions and government-related events.

Speaking in the Assembly, Mr. Viswanathan stated that the special resolution had been accepted by 8.5 crore Tamil people. He welcomed the support expressed by several members of the House for the move.

Mr. Viswanathan also referred to an incident that occurred at Manonmaniam Sundaranar University on July 28, stating that it amounted to an insult to the Tamil language. He welcomed the statements issued by state ministers in support of the resolution following that incident.

Highlighting the origins of the song, Mr. Viswanathan noted that 'Neerarum Kadaludutha', popularly sung as 'Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu', was composed by Professor P. Sundaram Pillai. The song originally featured in his famous Tamil play titled 'Manonmaniam'.

According to Mr. Viswanathan, the song was adopted and widely sung by Tamil literary organisations, including the Karandhai Tamil Sangam, beginning in 1914. It was subsequently officially recognised as the State song by the Tamil Nadu government in 1970.

He added that the lyrics celebrate Tamil Nadu’s geography, nature, culture, and the richness of the Tamil language, while highlighting its enduring youth and continuity.
