Chennai Bypass Toll Plazas Integrated Into National Traffic Monitoring System

Commuters using the Chennai Bypass Road will soon receive real-time traffic updates as the Vanagaram and Surapattu toll plazas have been integrated into a new national traffic monitoring portal. Developed by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), the system aims to track congestion and reduce waiting times for motorists.

The IHMCL, which is a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), designed the Geographic Information System (GIS) based platform to measure queue lengths in meters, track vehicle speeds, and calculate total waiting times.

The initiative will initially cover 100 toll plazas across the country. Alongside the Vanagaram plaza near Porur and the Surapattu plaza near Madhavaram, the system will cover the Krishnagiri plaza and the Pallikonda plaza in Vellore. These specific locations were selected based on congestion reports received by the 1033 National Highway helpline over the past five years.

When congestion at a monitored toll plaza crosses a predefined threshold, the system will issue alerts and suggest lane redistribution to improve traffic flow. For example, during festive weekends when traffic leaving Chennai surges, wait times at the Vanagaram toll plaza can exceed 10 to 15 minutes. To ease this congestion, the system can recommend allocating seven to eight of the ten available lanes specifically for outbound vehicles.

The portal will be fully accessible to the public, allowing commuters to check peak traffic hours and current waiting times before planning their trips.

In addition to tracking numbers, live camera feeds at the toll plazas will provide real-time visual data on potential bottlenecks. This allows NHAI officials to take immediate corrective action on the ground. The software will also assist NHAI field offices by offering comparative traffic data on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis to help analyze long-term patterns.
