Worker dies after 30-foot fall during roof repairs at Gummidipoondi steel plant

A 28-year-old worker died on Saturday after falling from a height of about 30 feet while carrying out roof repair work at a private steel plant in the Sipcot industrial estate in Gummidipoondi. The victim was identified as Surya, a resident of Elavur village.

According to the Sipcot police, the private steel plant employs more than 50 workers. The factory’s roof had recently developed structural damage, prompting repair work that had been under way for the past five days.

On Saturday, Surya had reported for work as usual and was performing repairs on the damaged roof. While working at the height, he accidentally lost his footing and fell approximately 30 feet to the ground, sustaining severe injuries.

Following the fall, Surya was rushed to a government hospital at Kottakarai. However, doctors at the medical facility declared him dead upon arrival.

Upon receiving information about the accident, officers from the Sipcot police station reached the steel plant. The police recovered the body and sent it to the Ponneri Government Hospital for a postmortem examination.

The Sipcot police have registered a case and are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. The investigation will focus on whether the factory had adequate safety measures in place for workers carrying out the hazardous roof repairs.
