Woman Arrested in Coimbatore for Rs 8 Lakh Burglary in Varadarajapuram

A 30-year-old woman from Ennore was arrested in Coimbatore by the city police in connection with a burglary at a house in Varadarajapuram, where Rs 8 lakh in cash was stolen. Police recovered Rs 4 lakh from the suspect, who allegedly targeted homes occupied by elderly residents by posing as a medical insurance representative.

The arrest followed a complaint lodged by Gopalakrishnan, a resident of Varadarajapuram. According to the complainant, cash amounting to Rs 8 lakh, which had been kept inside an almirah in his residence, was found stolen on August 20.

During the initial probe into the theft, Gopalakrishnan's wife informed the Ambattur police that she had spotted a woman walking out of their residence. Acting on this input, a special police team scanned and analysed video footage retrieved from more than 300 CCTV cameras installed across the surrounding localities to track the suspect's movements.

The surveillance footage helped investigators trace the woman, identified as Kokila, to Coimbatore, where she was subsequently apprehended and taken into custody.

During police interrogation, Kokila reportedly confessed to scouting unoccupied houses and carrying out burglaries. She also revealed to investigators that she had donated Rs 20,000 of the stolen cash into the hundi at the Tiruttani Murugan Temple in order to fulfil a vow.

Police have recovered half of the stolen cash and are conducting further enquiries regarding her involvement in similar burglary offences.
