Two Chennai Bypass toll plazas integrated into national traffic monitoring system

Commuters traveling along the Chennai Bypass Road are set to receive real-time traffic updates following the integration of key toll plazas into a new national monitoring network. The Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL) has connected the toll plazas at Vanagaram, situated near Porur, and Surapattu, located near Madhavaram, to a centralized traffic monitoring portal.
This technological integration is designed to inform commuters of current traffic conditions, helping them plan their journeys and avoid delays around the busy Chennai Bypass toll plazas.
The monitoring system was developed by IHMCL, which operates as a subsidiary of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). The agency built a GIS-based tool that is capable of tracking both traffic congestion and vehicle waiting times at toll points.
In its initial phase, the new GIS-based system will monitor 100 toll plazas across India. Among the first group of selected plazas are the two Chennai Bypass locations, alongside toll plazas in Krishnagiri and at Pallikonda in Vellore.
According to project details, the 100 plazas chosen for the initial launch were selected based on historical data. Authorities analyzed congestion reports compiled by the 1033 National Highway helpline over the past five years to determine which locations required the most urgent monitoring.
The real-time monitoring tool operates by measuring the physical length of vehicle queues in metres. It also tracks the speed of vehicles as they approach and pass through the toll gates, using this information to calculate the total waiting times for motorists.
If the congestion levels at any of the integrated plazas exceed a predefined threshold, the system will automatically trigger alerts. Additionally, the tool is programmed to recommend lane redistribution strategies to help plaza operators manage the bottleneck and improve the flow of traffic.
