Two arrested after driving on bare wheel rim on Salem-Chennai National Highway

The Salem–Chennai National Highway witnessed chaotic scenes when two youths, allegedly under the influence of ganja, caused a series of road accidents and drove for kilometres on a bare wheel rim. The police have arrested the two accused, identified as Deepak Guru and Thirumurugan, following a chase by local residents who cornered the vehicle.

According to reports, the hazardous sequence of events began when the car occupied by the two youths rammed into another vehicle on the highway. The impact of the initial collision caused one of the tyres of the suspects' car to come off completely. Despite losing a tyre, the driver of the vehicle refused to stop and continued to speed down the highway.

The car continued its journey for several kilometres with only three tyres. The bare metal rim of the wheel scraped directly against the road surface, generating friction and sending out a continuous stream of sparks as it sped along the highway. This created a severe public hazard for other motorists and vehicles travelling on the route.

Local residents and onlookers who noticed the highly dangerous driving on the highway decided to take action. They began chasing the speeding vehicle and eventually succeeded in cornering it, bringing the dangerous drive to an end. However, before the locals could secure them, the two occupants abandoned the damaged car and fled from the spot on foot.

Upon receiving information about the incident and the abandoned vehicle, the police rushed to the scene on the Salem–Chennai National Highway. The police officers launched an immediate search operation to track down the escaped individuals. Both Deepak Guru and Thirumurugan were subsequently arrested. The police have registered a case, and a formal investigation into the matter is currently underway.
