TN to Roll Out Digital Driving Licences and Vehicle RC Services From Sep 15

The Tamil Nadu government will roll out digital services for driving licences and vehicle registration certificates starting from September 15, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced in the Assembly in Chennai on Wednesday.

Making a statement under Rule 110, the Chief Minister said the initiative is designed to eliminate processing delays, minimise unnecessary physical visits to Regional Transport Offices (RTOs), and establish a transparent, corruption-free administration by enabling citizens to download their documents online.

Under the new system, candidates who successfully clear their driving tests will receive digital driving licences on the same day. Currently, the waiting period for documents ranges from one week to a month. The transition to the digital format aims to eliminate this backlog, offering instant access for new vehicle owners to download their digital Registration Certificates (RCs) via the internet.

The digital documents will feature a QR code that allows officials to verify records electronically. This system differs from traditional chip-embedded physical cards and is expected to significantly reduce the risk of fake or counterfeit documents. In addition, the digital format provides an easy recovery option, as citizens can simply download and print their documents if the physical copies are lost or damaged.

According to the Chief Minister, these measures are part of a broader reform known as the Anywhere Registration/Licensing system, which will permit citizens to apply for and manage transport-related services across any Regional Transport Office in Tamil Nadu.
