TN Enforces Mobile Phone Ban Across 52 Major Temples From September 1

CHENNAI — The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department has enforced a strict ban on carrying mobile phones inside 52 major temples across Tamil Nadu starting September 1. The restriction prohibits selfies, reels, and casual photography inside temple complexes to maintain a quiet, distraction-free environment for worshipping devotees.

The regulatory move is based on existing court directives and is designed to protect the sanctity of sacred premises while ensuring undisturbed darshan. HR&CE Minister S. Ramesh stated that the ban is already operational in major shrines, including those at Palani, Tiruchendur, Madurai, and Rameswaram.

According to the department, the growing tendency among visitors to photograph and film deities, record video reels, and take selfies had begun negatively impacting the overall worship experience. Officials noted that the policy seeks to preserve the traditional and spiritual character of temple spaces beyond just controlling electronic device usage.

To accommodate visitors who arrive with their devices, temple administrations have set up phone deposit counters and secure lockers outside premises. Devotees can store their phones at these facilities for a fixed minimum fee of Rs 5 per device.

Following the rollout, long queues have begun forming outside deposit counters at several temples. In response, the department has directed local temple administrations to establish additional counters wherever large footfalls warrant expanded infrastructure.

Temple authorities and security staff have also received instructions to assist devotees who need access to communication devices during medical or personal emergencies.
