TN CM Unveils Major Water Projects and ₹236-Crore Sewage Upgrade for Egmore

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Wednesday announced a series of major water supply and civic infrastructure projects in the Legislative Assembly, including a ₹236-crore upgrade to the underground sewage network across Egmore, Perambur, Kolathur, and Villivakkam.

Making a suo motu statement in the House on September 2, 2026, the Chief Minister laid out proposals aimed at significantly improving drinking water supply and sanitation infrastructure across Chennai and surrounding municipal areas.

Among the key announcements was a proposal to establish a ₹4,800-crore desalination plant at Minjur. The facility, planned with a capacity of 400 million litres per day, is designed to cater to the drinking water requirements of North Chennai, Avadi, Ponneri, and Minjur.

To address local water distribution, the Chief Minister also introduced a ₹500-crore initiative dedicated to providing uninterrupted 24x7 water supply to the Avadi Municipal Corporation. In addition, the state government plans to expand the capacity of the water treatment plant at Kilpauk with an investment of ₹410 crore.

Sanitation infrastructure formed another major pillar of the announcements. Alongside the ₹236-crore sewage network upgrade for Egmore and neighbouring central and northern neighbourhoods, a ₹960-crore underground sewage project was sanctioned for the Kundrathur and Nandivaram-Guduvancheri municipalities.

Furthermore, Mr. Vijay announced a dedicated allocation of ₹100 crore to address basic infrastructure deficits across Chennai. This funding will be directed toward laying roads, constructing storm-water drains, installing streetlights, setting up footpaths and solid-waste management facilities, as well as building playgrounds and community halls in localities lacking essential civic amenities.
