TN Assembly Bill Proposes Hiking MLA Vehicle Allowance to ₹75,000

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay on Monday tabled a bill in Chennai to amend the Tamil Nadu Payment of Salaries Act, 1951, seeking to increase the monthly vehicle allowance for Members of the Legislative Assembly and introduce a dedicated allowance for personal assistants.

Under the provisions of the proposed amendment bill, the monthly vehicle allowance for MLAs will be enhanced from ₹25,000 to ₹75,000. In addition, the legislation introduces a monthly personal assistant (PA) allowance of ₹25,000 for each legislator.

The amendment follows a recent announcement by the Chief Minister to provide a vehicle to every member of the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The move is intended to enable legislators to travel across their constituencies and discharge their duties effectively.

The Chief Minister's initial announcement in the House came in response to a request raised by VCK legislator L E Jothimani. The legislator had asked the state government to provide a car for first-time MLAs and those hailing from humble backgrounds.

Outlining the necessity of the legislative measure, the Chief Minister stated in the bill's statement of objects and reasons that the government decided to suitably amend the Tamil Nadu Payment of Salaries Act, 1951, to give formal effect to the announcement.
