Thoraipakkam Teenager Arrested for Allegedly Murdering Mother After Failing Exams

An 18-year-old youth was arrested on Monday for allegedly murdering his 43-year-old mother at their residence in Thoraipakkam, Chennai. The incident occurred around 2:30 am on Monday, after the teenager reportedly experienced severe distress over failing his Class 12 examinations.

The deceased was identified as Chenni Devi, the wife of Babulal, who runs a local pan shop. The family, originally from Rajasthan, had been residing in Thoraipakkam with their son Rakesh, the suspect, and their 17-year-old daughter.

According to the police, Babulal had recently traveled to Rajasthan following the death of his elder brother, leaving his wife alone with their two children.

During the early hours of Monday, while the family was asleep, Rakesh allegedly attacked his mother. Police stated that he strangled her, stabbed her multiple times with a knife, and beat her with a pestle.

Immediately after the assault, Rakesh ran out of the house screaming for help. He knocked on the doors of his neighbours and relatives who lived nearby. They rushed to the residence and took Chenni Devi to a nearby private hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Upon receiving the information, the Thoraipakkam police arrived at the scene, registered a case, and sent the body for a postmortem examination.

During the police inquiry, Rakesh confessed that he had gone to sleep thinking about how his mother had recently scolded him for not clearing his school exams. Police reported that he woke up angry in the middle of the night and attacked her.

The police also stated that Rakesh had reportedly been undergoing treatment for depression at a private hospital, although investigators have not yet found medical records to verify this claim. His parents had frequently scolded him regarding his academic failure.

Rakesh was arrested and subsequently sent for remand later on Monday.
