Tamil Nadu CM Office Shifting to Namakkal Kavignar Maligai Confirmed
The Tamil Nadu state government on Monday issued a formal order confirming the relocation of Chief Minister C Joseph’s office from the historic Fort St George building to the top floor of the 10-storey Namakkal Kavignar Maligai within the same campus in Chennai. The shift comes in response to a space crunch in the heritage structure and the need for a larger facility to host high-profile visitors, including diplomats, business leaders, and political dignitaries.
Under the new plan, the chambers of the Chief Minister’s advisors and secretaries will also move to the 10th floor of Namakkal Kavignar Maligai alongside the main office. The consolidation aims to establish a compact, all-in-one Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) featuring dedicated conference rooms and meeting halls located close to one another.
To clear space on the 10th floor for the new executive suite, the state government has initiated a widespread shuffle of administrative departments. Sections of the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR) operating on the 10th floor are being moved to vacant spaces on the ground, second, and third floors of the Kalaivanar Arangam premises in Chepauk, where initial relocation work has already commenced.
Key divisions moving immediately to Chepauk to expedite construction work include the Budget Division, the Exhibition Permit Division, and the Chief Minister's Social Media Division. Additionally, the Home, Prohibition and Excise, and Commercial Taxes and Registration Departments will temporarily move from the 10th floor to dining and meeting halls situated across the first, third, fifth, seventh, and eighth floors.
The Public Works (Buildings) Department has directed officials to rapidly furnish all relocated offices with essential furniture, electrical appliances, telephone lines, and internet infrastructure. The formal order puts an end to weeks of official speculation, during which unconfirmed grapevine reports had attributed the planned move to Vastu compliance alongside spatial limitations.
