Tambaram Police Shoot History-Sheeter During Escape Attempt in Thirumudivakkam
On Saturday, July 18, 2026, a special police team under the Tambaram Police Commissionerate shot and apprehended a 26-year-old history-sheeter near Kavanur grounds in Thirumudivakkam after he allegedly attacked a head constable with a knife. The incident occurred during a weapon recovery operation when the accused attempted to escape from custody.
The accused, identified as Karuppu alias Tamilazhagu, is a resident of Eeswaran Kovil Street in Thirumudivakkam. According to senior officers, Karuppu has an extensive criminal record, with several cases registered against him, including 15 cases of murder and attempt to murder.
The operation began after a special team, led by Thirumudivakkam Police Inspector Muthukumar, received a tip-off regarding the suspect's whereabouts. Acting on this information, the police team apprehended Karuppu along with his 24-year-old associate, Akash alias Surya. Police officials later revealed that Karuppu, who is the brother-in-law of the notorious rowdy ‘Otteri’ Silambu, and Surya were involved in manufacturing country-made bombs.
Following their arrest, the suspects allegedly confessed to hiding weapons at a location near the Kavanur grounds, which is located near Kundrathur. The police team subsequently escorted Karuppu to the site to recover the hidden weapons.
Upon reaching the designated spot, Karuppu reportedly retrieved a hidden knife and attacked Head Constable Vijayakumar, causing an injury to his right elbow. As Karuppu attempted to flee the scene, Inspector Muthukumar drew his service revolver and fired a shot at the suspect's right ankle to stop him, successfully apprehending him.
Following the shooting, Karuppu was initially rushed to the Tambaram Government Hospital for medical attention. He was later shifted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital to receive advanced treatment for his gunshot wound.
The injured head constable, Vijayakumar, was treated for the wound on his right elbow and received outpatient care. Both suspects remain in police custody as investigations continue.
