Ranipet Traffic Inspector Arrested for Molesting Woman in Velachery

A 45-year-old traffic police inspector posted with the Traffic Enforcement Wing in Ranipet district was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly molesting a woman while under the influence of alcohol in Velachery, Chennai. The accused officer was identified by police as Manimaran.

According to police officials, Manimaran had arrived in Chennai on Sunday to meet his niece. Prior to the incident, both Manimaran and his niece reportedly consumed alcohol. The duo then traveled towards the Velachery area on a motorcycle, with Manimaran riding pillion behind his niece.

While they were passing through a road in Velachery, Manimaran allegedly reached out and inappropriately touched a woman who was walking along the road. The woman immediately reacted and raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby citizens. Passers-by and motorists traveling through the area quickly responded to her cries and came to her aid at the scene.

Following the encounter, the woman approached the authorities to report the assault. Based on the victim's complaint, the Velachery Police officially registered a case and initiated an investigation into the matter.

To trace the suspect, police officers gathered and examined footage from various closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras installed along the road and surrounding areas where the incident occurred. After reviewing the video footage, officers were able to successfully identify Manimaran and trace his whereabouts.

The accused police inspector was subsequently taken into custody on Tuesday. Following his arrest, officers produced Manimaran before a local magistrate, who ordered that he be remanded to judicial custody. Police noted that the victim's identity has been kept confidential and has not been revealed to the public, in compliance with Supreme Court directives governing cases related to sexual assault.
