Protesters Breach Barricades Near Fort St. George to Approach CM Convoy
A security breach of the Chief Minister's convoy occurred outside the Secretariat near the entrance of Fort St. George in Chennai on Thursday, September 3, 2026. Relatives of custodial death victim Akash Delison breached barricades and attempted to approach and block Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay's convoy to submit a petition seeking a CB-CID probe.
The incident took place while the Chief Minister's convoy was travelling from his residence in Neelankarai to the Secretariat. Over 100 people had assembled near the entrance of Fort St. George in an effort to meet the Chief Minister.
Among the demonstrators were Rajesh Kannan, 50, and his wife Anandhi, 43, who are relatives of Akash Delison, a youth from Sivaganga district who allegedly died in police custody at the Manamadurai police station in March this year.
Delison's family alleged that although a case had been registered against six police personnel in connection with the custodial death, no action had been taken against the personnel. The family was demanding an inquiry by the CB-CID and sought to hand over their petition directly to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay.
As the group breached and crossed the barricades to enter the road, security personnel intervened to block them. In the process of trying to stop the demonstrators, a police constable fell and suffered a minor injury.
According to the police, Kannan breached the barricade and ran towards the approaching convoy. When Constable Ramkumar from the Tondiarpet police station stepped in to intercept and stop him, Kannan allegedly punched the constable in the chest.
Constable Ramkumar suffered a minor injury from the assault and subsequently complained of chest pain. He was taken to a government hospital to receive medical treatment.
Despite the breach, the Chief Minister's convoy reached the Secretariat portico safely at 10:02 a.m. Police detained eight individuals, including Kannan and Anandhi, for questioning in connection with the security breach outside Fort St. George. Authorities indicated that the detained persons were expected to be released following the conclusion of the Assembly proceedings on Thursday.
