OMR School Heads Slam CBSE After 59-Day Delay in Class X Second Board Exam Results

The nearly two-month delay in declaring the results of the CBSE Class X second board exam has left school heads on OMR in Chennai upset, with many calling the new test initiative a failed attempt by the board. The exams were conducted between May 15 and May 21, but the results were only declared on a Saturday evening, 59 days after the exams concluded.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) introduced the second board exam for Class X this academic year. This new system deviated from the traditional improvement exams that were usually held in June or July. Under the new guidelines, students were permitted to opt for up to three subjects to improve their scores.

However, the prolonged delay in releasing the scores defeated the primary purpose of the exam. A principal of a prominent school on OMR stated that the results were supposed to be released by the second or third week of June. Had the results been declared during that period, it would have been ideal for students who wished to change their academic streams after improving their scores.

Instead, because of the 59-day delay, many students had already moved on and settled into their respective academic streams by the time the results were made public. School heads questioned the utility of releasing the results so late, noting that the announcement came hardly a week before the Class 12 supplementary exams.

In addition to the impact on students, school heads criticized the board’s lax approach due to the burden it placed on staff. More than 500 teachers were put on duty for the exam, which forced them to give up their vacation days. These teachers had to report for the Class X exam duties immediately after completing their Class 12 evaluation work.
