New Stormwater Drain Along Jawaharlal Nehru Road to Drain Water from Anna Nagar
A new stormwater drainage project will be constructed along Jawaharlal Nehru Road from the Otteri Nullah canal zero point to the Cooum River to drain excess water from Anna Nagar, Villivakkam, Ambattur, Korattur, and Padi, the state government announced on Monday.
The project is part of the newly unveiled Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Development Mission, designed to support stable urban expansion, improve residents' quality of life, and upgrade municipal infrastructure to accommodate future population and economic growth.
Education Minister Rajmohan presented the announcements in the Legislative Assembly on behalf of Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, who also holds the portfolio for municipal administration, during the reply to the discussion on demands for grants for the municipal administration department.
The mission will focus on delivering transparent, people-centric civic amenities, including safe drinking water, structured drainage networks, solid waste management, safe roads, sustained urban greenery, restoration of water bodies, and smoother vehicular traffic flow.
Alongside the drainage channel for Anna Nagar and surrounding neighbourhoods, the government announced several complementary civic projects across the wider Chennai metropolitan area. These include the renovation of the Tiruvottiyur sewage treatment plant using Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor technology at an estimated cost of Rs. 42 crore.
The state also plans to process biogas generated from sewage treatment plants operated by the Chennai Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board into compressed biogas for commercial sale. Modern machinery worth Rs. 102 crore will be purchased to maintain underground drainage and sewer networks across corporations and municipalities.
Additionally, the administration outlined plans to clear 29 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste from dump yards in Kodungaiyur and Perungudi through bio-mining, alongside a Rs. 93 crore bio-mining initiative to clear garbage yards in Avadi, Tambaram, Coimbatore, and 25 other municipalities. Local bodies across the state will also receive one lakh new LED lights under the broader urban improvement plan.
