Tamil Nadu to Introduce New School Curriculum from 2027-28 Academic Year
School Education Minister Rajmohan announced in Chennai on Monday that a new curriculum based on analytical thinking, reasoning, innovation, and emerging technology will be introduced for classes 1 to 12 starting from the 2027-28 academic year.
Replying to the discussion on demands for grants to his ministry in the Assembly, the minister stated that the revised syllabus would also focus on entrepreneurship and upskilling with Artificial Intelligence. To support foundational learning, the government will expand the 'Thiran plus' scheme for students from second standard to plus-2 with an outlay of Rs 12 crore to help address learning difficulties in letters and numerals.
As part of the initiatives, AI-powered personalised and adaptive learning will be launched in the first phase across 500 government middle schools for students in classes 6 to 8. Additionally, the 'TN SPARK' integrated Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies Curriculum will be expanded in stages for classes 6 to 12 to build digital and problem-solving skills.
Minister Rajmohan also announced the 'Vetri Paathai Scheme' with a budget of Rs 22 crore across 172 government higher secondary schools. The initiative will offer coaching, model tests, and guidance to help students secure admissions to premier higher education institutions. A competency-based assessment system will also be rolled out for classes 6 to 12 at an estimated cost of Rs 18 crore.
To improve infrastructure and practical learning, science lab equipment will be provided to 1,779 government high and higher secondary schools at a cost of Rs 21 crore. The state will also implement the TN IGNITE initiative across 3,205 government higher secondary schools to encourage innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership through mentorship and hands-on learning.
Other programmes announced include the 'Magizhvudan Munneru' scheme across 6,279 schools to foster creativity and leadership, and the development of 50 high and higher secondary schools as 'Sports Plus schools' equipped with sports infrastructure and coaching. Furthermore, government schools will be linked with public libraries, and skill-based Tamil literary competitions will be introduced in 13,259 schools.
