Minister N Anand Launches Desilting Works On Cooum River Before Monsoon

Water Resources Department (WRD) Minister N Anand launched desilting works on the Cooum River on Monday, directing officials to complete the exercise before the onset of the northeast monsoon. Desilting operations are also under way at multiple key waterbodies, including the Adyar river near Manapakkam.
According to a senior WRD official, the department will undertake large-scale desilting works with the support of various organisations through CSR initiatives, alongside involvement from volunteers.
In addition to the Cooum River and the Adyar river near Manapakkam, active desilting operations are currently taking place at the Buckingham canal near Sholinganallur, as well as at Velachery lake and Narayanapuram lake.
WRD officials stated that these specific areas were chosen because they witnessed severe waterlogging and flooding in the past. Starting the desilting works well in advance is intended to improve the flow of surplus water and minimise the impact of heavy rainfall during the upcoming monsoon season.
