Madras University Alumnus Unearths Megalithic Burial Complex in Krishnagiri

An alumnus of the University of Madras department of ancient history and archaeology has discovered a Megalithic burial complex featuring several dolmens and cist burials at Kadamakuttai village in Krishnagiri district. While multiple megalithic sites have been documented across the region, this site stands out because the enclosing structural wall remains visible and the monuments follow an intentional burial layout.

The discovery was made by Sudharshan R, a former student of the Madras University department who currently works as a project associate at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts under the Union Ministry of Culture in Puducherry.

According to Sudharshan, the burial complex offers crucial evidence regarding ancient ritual behaviour and funerary traditions during the Megalithic era across northern Tamil Nadu.

During an exploration of the surrounding landscape, Sudharshan located an extensive array of Neolithic artefacts. The findings included polished stone celts, grinding stones, soapstone objects, and a variety of other lithic implements, pointing to clear Neolithic occupation in the area.

Additionally, a massive natural boulder bearing three distinct Neolithic polishing grooves was identified near the burial complex. The grooves indicate that ancient inhabitants used the site for processing and finishing stone tools.
