Kolapakkam Ration Shop Transformed Into Thiruvalluvar Noolagam Community Library

A fair price ration shop in Kolapakkam in Chengalpet district has been cleaned up, renovated, and converted into a community library and reading corner named Thiruvalluvar Noolagam. The initiative was spearheaded by ration shop worker Velu Chinnasamy, who sought to ensure that local residents left the facility with something more than just their monthly ration supplies.

The transformation began with a thorough cleanup of the premises, where workers first removed liquor bottles that were strewn about the area. Following the clean-up, a roof was put up over the space, and basic amenities including chairs, fans, and drinking water were installed to make the venue comfortable for visitors.

Excited by the project, local residents and workers actively contributed to building the community facility. Kumaresan, a painter and volunteer, sponsored books and volunteered his professional services to brighten the store's walls. Kumaresan shared that he was unable to study during his youth because he had to earn a living, noting that if the books help even a few students succeed, it would be enough for him.

Chinnasamy’s co-workers contributed building materials necessary to construct the library section, while an area social worker sponsored chairs and fans. Panchayat president Vinitha Srinivasan extended civic support by funding the installation of new flooring, cement seating, and a grill gate for security.

Residents soon began bringing in both new and used books to stock the shelves. Every book in the growing collection is now catalogued, offering school textbooks, Tamil and English literature, self-development titles, and exam preparation material. Chinnasamy explained that the primary goal of establishing the catalogued collection was to make expensive study material affordable and accessible to local students.

The community library has seen steady engagement from various demographic groups across the area. Schoolchildren visit the reading corner after their classes, senior citizens browse through the literature, and local women have become some of the shop's most active readers. In response to the encouraging public feedback, organizers are expanding the setup by adding more tables, chairs, and lighting to accommodate people reading during the night.
