IIT-Madras Director V. Kamakoti Outlines Strategy to Reach 50% Enrolment Target

Speaking at Sandipandi Vidyalaya School’s annual day on Sunday, Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-Madras) Director V. Kamakoti called for a collaborative strategy to achieve a 50 per cent Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in higher education by 2035.

The 50 per cent GER goal is a key target under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Addressing the gathering, Mr. Kamakoti stated that achieving this target is possible if higher secondary school students and their parents take an active role in community outreach.

According to a press release, Mr. Kamakoti suggested that every higher secondary student and their parents speak to a minimum of two to three families from marginalised communities. He encouraged them to motivate these families to enrol their children into higher education institutions.

Mr. Kamakoti noted that if students in every school undertake this initiative, it will create a widespread ripple effect across society, enabling the nation to reach the 50 per cent GER target by 2035.

During the annual day event, the IIT-Madras director also distributed prizes to the school toppers and handed out special prizes to teachers.
