Governor Arlekar Urges Blending Traditional Knowledge and Modern Tech at IMECE in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Thursday called for combining traditional knowledge with contemporary technology so that society can draw lessons from both, speaking at the International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition held at the Chennai Trade Centre.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Arlekar noted that while many people consider the Mahabharata a myth, it represents history for the nation. He pointed out that the Udyoga Parva, a section of the epic, offered valuable management lessons as far back as 5,000 years ago, adding that the text also contains engineering references that remain relevant today.

The Governor linked this perspective to national development, noting that India is working toward an 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'. Referring to the 'Viksit Bharat' national vision plan, which aims for the country to become fully developed by 2047, Mr. Arlekar stated that fulfilling this vision requires all goals, intentions, and efforts to be directed toward self-reliance.

Thomas Costabile, Executive Director and CEO of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), said India’s rapid expansion in manufacturing, digital technologies, energy systems, transportation infrastructure, and advanced research is generating opportunities globally. He urged engineers to think boldly, collaborate openly, and work together to convert bold concepts into real-world impacts.

IMECE India Congress Chair K. Shanmuga Sundaram stated during his address that the country no longer requires just engineers, but comprehensive engineering solutions for clean energy, mobility, water, manufacturing, climate resilience, healthcare, and infrastructure. He highlighted Tamil Nadu’s capabilities in automobiles, aerospace, electronics, energy, manufacturing, infrastructure, and research, noting that Chennai serves as an ideal host city where industry and knowledge converge.

The inaugural session was also attended by 145th ASME President Janis Terpenny, Council of State Industrial Development and Investment Corporations of India Director General Hansraj Verma, and National Institute of Ocean Technology Director Balaji Ramakrishnan. ASME India Director and President Madhukar Sharma delivered the vote of thanks.
