GCC and EFI Restore Sholinganallur's Sathyavani Muthu Pond Ahead of Monsoon

The Greater Chennai Corporation and the Environmental Foundation of India have completed the restoration of the Sathyavani Muthu Pond in Sholinganallur ahead of the monsoon. The initiative forms part of ongoing civic measures to revive urban waterbodies and strengthen the city’s blue-green infrastructure.
Situated along Old Mahabalipuram Road, west of the Buckingham Canal, the pond historically served as a thriving wetland ecosystem supporting various species of birds, reptiles, and fish. Over time, rapid urbanisation across the surrounding landscape caused severe degradation, breaking the waterbody down into smaller puddle-like systems and diminishing its capacity to sustain aquatic life.
A combination of illegal sewage discharge, indiscriminate garbage dumping, heavy silt deposition, and invasive weed growth had left the pond heavily polluted and choked before the restoration initiative was undertaken.
Arun Krishnamurthy of the Environmental Foundation of India explained that the revival work was designed to reverse the extensive degradation of the site. He noted that the deterioration of the pond had raised concerns regarding groundwater quality in the Sholinganallur area. According to Krishnamurthy, restoring the waterbody will improve rainwater retention and groundwater recharge while establishing a better habitat for local biodiversity.
Civic officials highlighted the strategic importance of the pond amid the rapid urban development in Sholinganallur and adjacent neighbourhoods. Sholinganallur Zonal Officer G Lokeshwaran stated that such waterbodies are essential during the monsoon season because they help retain rainwater and reduce surface runoff.
Residents in the neighbourhood welcomed the cleanup and revival of the site but emphasized the ongoing need for regular upkeep. Dinesh Thillaiyappan, a resident of Sholinganallur, noted that the pond had been almost unusable for years due to persistent issues with garbage, weeds, and stagnant water. He added that the restored waterbody is expected to hold rainwater more effectively during the monsoon and serve as a valuable natural resource for the locality once again.
