CM Vijay Inspects 45 MLD Koyambedu TTRO Plant in Chennai

Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay carried out an official inspection of the operations at the 45-million-litre-per-day (MLD) Tertiary Treatment Reverse Osmosis (TTRO) plant located in Koyambedu, Chennai, on Monday. The plant is operated by Metro Water to manage municipal wastewater treatment and recycling within the city.

Government Chief Whip R Sabarinathan and Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department secretary Gagandeep Singh took part in the inspection alongside Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay during the visit to the Koyambedu facility.

The inspection covered the operational details of the Koyambedu TTRO plant, which forms a key component of Chennai's long-term water security strategy and the state's push towards creating a circular water economy. Under this strategy, two TTRO plants with a processing capacity of 45 MLD each have been established at Koyambedu and Kodungaiyur. Operating in tandem, these two facilities recycle 90 MLD of treated wastewater every day, according to an official government release.

According to the government release, recycled water generated from the Koyambedu facility is supplied on a daily basis to industries. Supplying this recycled water to industrial units allows potable water that was previously allocated for industrial use to be diverted to meet the everyday drinking water needs of Chennai residents.

The TTRO plant in Koyambedu functions alongside a vast municipal wastewater network managed by Metro Water throughout Chennai. Currently, Metro Water manages wastewater across the city through an infrastructure network consisting of 438 sewage pumping stations and 22 sewage treatment plants.

During Monday's inspection, Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, Government Chief Whip R Sabarinathan, and Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department secretary Gagandeep Singh reviewed the plant's daily supply of recycled water to industries and its role in freeing up drinking water supplies for residents. The ongoing operations at the Koyambedu and Kodungaiyur facilities remain central to Metro Water's daily management of Chennai's wastewater recycling and drinking water distribution networks.
