CM Vijay Announces Olympic City and Motorsports Hub for Chennai in Assembly

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay announced the establishment of a world-class Tamil Nadu Olympic City in Chennai under Rule 110 in the State Assembly on Thursday. The project is designed to serve as an integrated sports hub providing athletes with advanced training and support facilities.

According to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Office, the Olympic City will be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority. The facility will feature world-class sports arenas, state-of-the-art sporting equipment, and a High Performance Training Centre. The complex will also include dedicated Sports Science and Sports Medicine centres, alongside modern residential infrastructure including accommodation for sportspersons and coaches.

Government officials stated that the Olympic City aims to provide comprehensive support to help athletes from Tamil Nadu win more medals at the Olympic Games and other international sporting competitions.

In addition to the Olympic City, the Chief Minister announced that a dedicated motorsports city will be established in Chennai. The facility is planned to host Formula 1 through Formula 4 races in the city.

The announcement aligns with wider national efforts to bring international racing back to India. In June, the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports established a task force to monitor motorsports with an objective to return Formula 1 racing to the country by the end of 2028. "We will try to bring back F1 in India by 2028. For this, we created a task force which monitors motor sports in the country and submits its report to the Ministry," a ministry source told ANI.

Earlier this year, Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India President Arindam Ghosh met in New Delhi with Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister of State Raksha Khadse, senior officials, and stakeholders. Ghosh later noted at the FMSCI Annual Awards function that discussions focused on bringing Formula 1 back to India by 2030, alongside a round of the World Rally Championship and MotoGP by 2028. He added that the federation stressed driver development and the overall growth of motorsports in India, noting that the inputs were well received.

At the awards night held in Bengaluru, the motorsports national champions for 2025 were honoured. A total of 137 trophies were presented across 17 disciplines covering both two-wheelers and four-wheelers, with awards also given to winning teams, promoters, and sponsors of the championships.
