Chennai Police SI Attacked With Sickle In Athipattu, Hunt On For Suspects

A sub-inspector belonging to the Greater Chennai Police’s Anti-Narcotics Intelligence Unit (ANIU) was attacked with a sickle on Saturday night during an operation to arrest a wanted history-sheeter at a rented house in Athipattu near Minjur.

The injured officer, identified as Venkatesh, sustained head injuries during the violent assault. The primary suspect, a history-sheeter named Boopalan, along with his accomplices, managed to escape from the spot. The incident has triggered a police search operation in the area to track down and apprehend the accused.

According to police sources, Venkatesh and another ANIU officer had been tracking Boopalan’s movements using mobile phone location data. Boopalan was wanted in connection with an active case registered by the Villivakkam police. The location tracking data indicated that the suspect was hiding inside a rented house located in Athipattu.

Acting on this specific intelligence, the officers reached the residential premises in Athipattu to apprehend Boopalan. However, as the police officers moved in to make the arrest, a group of men who were hiding inside the house launched an attack. The assailants targeted Venkatesh with a sickle, inflicting injuries directly to his head.

Following the confrontation, Boopalan and his accomplices fled the scene before backup police teams could arrive at the location. The injured sub-inspector was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Minjur, where medical professionals administered treatment for his head injuries. Police officials have stated that Venkatesh is currently in stable condition.

In the wake of the incident, Red Hills Deputy Commissioner Maheswari and other senior police officers visited the crime scene in Athipattu. The senior officials reviewed the progress of the investigation. A hunt is currently underway to locate and arrest Boopalan and his accomplices.
