Chennai Mayor R. Priya Files Police Complaint Over Cyberbullying

Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) Mayor R. Priya has filed a complaint with the police against certain social media accounts, alleging that they have been subjecting her to cyberbullying. On Friday, July 24, 2026, Ms. Priya submitted a list of accounts that had been continuously bullying her online for nearly a year, along with her complaint, directly to Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj in Chennai.

Ms. Priya stated that the cyber abuse directed towards her intensified after the new government assumed office in the State. According to her, a group of users acting as "virtual warriors" had been repeatedly posting obscene comments against her online.

Speaking about the experience, Ms. Priya raised concerns about how such online attacks affect women in public life and those wishing to enter governance. "I am a woman who is an elected representative and the Mayor of the city. If I am facing such issues online, that puts into question the safety of women who are not holding any authority. This will discourage many women who aspire to enter politics," she told The Hindu.

She also pointed out that many women who spoke against political parties or the State government were subjected to online attacks that targeted their physical appearance or personal matters. She emphasized that political discussions should remain constructive rather than descending into personal character attacks. "It is alright to counter or debate with valid political points, not such slander," she said.

Following the submission of the complaint, the Mayor confirmed that a case has been registered. She added that Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj has assured her that official action will be taken against the social media accounts she identified for cyberbullying.
