Chennai Corporation Commissioner Inspects Biogas Plants in Madhavaram and Anna Nagar

Greater Chennai Corporation Commissioner G S Sameeran on Saturday conducted field inspections of key municipal waste management facilities across Madhavaram and Anna Nagar. The official oversight visit was aimed at ensuring the proper monitoring and operational efficiency of Chennai's waste-to-energy and biogas infrastructure.
During the first leg of his inspection tour, Commissioner Sameeran visited Chinna Sekkadu in Madhavaram to review the functioning of two major biogas projects. These plants have been set up under a public-private partnership model to manage urban organic waste. The two facilities are spread across land parcels measuring five acres and three acres, respectively, highlighting the scale of the waste management infrastructure in the locality.
According to municipal details, each of these Madhavaram plants has the capacity to process 100 tonnes of vegetable and food waste. During his visit, the commissioner closely examined the entire technical process of converting organic waste into biogas. Following the assessment, he instructed the corporation officials to focus on maximizing gas production through the effective and thorough utilization of the incoming organic waste.
Later in the day, the commissioner proceeded to inspect another 100-tonne capacity biogas plant located at Chetpet in Anna Nagar. To ensure that this facility runs at its optimal capacity, Sameeran directed the concerned officials to guarantee a steady, daily supply of the wet waste required for the plant’s operations.
Earlier during his schedule, the commissioner also reviewed the preparation work for a newly proposed biogas plant. This upcoming facility is planned to be set up at the Metrowater tertiary treatment plant campus situated in Koyambedu. Sameeran instructed the officials in charge to expedite the preliminary work and commence the project at the earliest.
