CB-CID Files Case Over AI Deepfake Videos Impersonating CM C. Joseph Vijay

The Cyber Crime Cell of the Crime Branch-Criminal Investigation Department (CB-CID) in Chennai has registered a case in connection with the circulation of an artificial intelligence-generated deepfake video impersonating Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on Facebook.

According to an official press release issued by the agency on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, the videos were created and distributed across Facebook and other social media platforms with an intention to cheat members of the public. The particular video featured Hindi audio and asked viewers to contact a WhatsApp phone number to receive financial help.

Following the circulation of the clip, the Cyber Crime Cell registered a case and approached social media platform Meta, seeking technical information relating to the fake account ID and user logs. Officials have also initiated a formal request to have the fabricated video taken down from the platform.

A preliminary investigation conducted by the agency revealed that multiple similar AI-generated deepfake videos depicting the Chief Minister offering financial assistance have been circulating online. The CB-CID stated that these videos were shared using purportedly Pakistan-based Facebook IDs.

The agency confirmed that an investigation is actively in progress to identify and track down the perpetrators behind the fraudulent campaign. Meanwhile, the CB-CID urged members of the general public not to respond to the phone numbers or join any WhatsApp groups shared in the fake clips, reiterating that the videos were fabricated by scamsters to deceive people.
