19-Year-Old Engineering Student Dies by Suicide at College in Thandalam

A 19-year-old engineering student died after jumping from the fifth floor of her college building in Thandalam, near Sriperumbudur, on Wednesday evening. The student, identified as Sherin, was enrolled in the second year of an Artificial Intelligence engineering course at a private institution in the area.

Following the fall on Wednesday evening, college authorities and staff rushed her to a nearby private hospital for emergency medical treatment. She succumbed to her injuries later on Wednesday night without responding to medical care.

According to the police, Sherin's father is employed in Singapore, while her mother works as a professor at a private college in Chennai. Inquiries revealed that Sherin had developed a close friendship with a male friend, which had reportedly caused a strong difference of opinion between her and her parents, subjecting her to severe mental stress.

Upon receiving information about her death, Sriperumbudur police personnel arrived at the private hospital and secured the premises. They subsequently sent her body to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in Chennai for a post-mortem examination.

Investigators also recovered a note written by the student before she took the extreme step. In the letter, Sherin stated that she was in a depressed state of mind, undergoing significant mental stress, and wished to be alone.

The Sriperumbudur police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation to establish the full sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding her death.
