Respect the heat
Chennai is hot and humid for a big chunk of the year, peaking before the monsoon. Plan outdoor stuff for early morning or evening, hydrate, and lean into the slow midday pace.
Where to be
Mylapore is the cultural, templey old heart. T Nagar is shopping chaos in the best way. The OMR/ECR corridor is the tech belt and the route to the beaches. Besant Nagar (Bessie) is the breezy, beachy, cafe-filled cool zone.
Getting around
The Chennai Metro is clean and growing, the buses are extensive, and app cabs and autos cover the rest. The ECR coastal road is a genuinely lovely drive.
The culture
Filter coffee is a ritual, Carnatic music is everywhere during the December season, and the beach is the city's living room.
