Vyasarpadi to Get Rs 1,013 Crore Facelift With 2,000 New Houses and Infrastructure

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a Rs 1,013 crore development plan featuring 50 infrastructure and housing projects in the Perambur assembly constituency, specifically focusing on Vyasarpadi, Chennai. Over the next two to three years, the initiative will fund the construction and reconstruction of nearly 2,000 houses, alongside major upgrades to local educational, sports, and healthcare facilities.

The Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB) will receive the largest share of the allocation, with Rs 544 crore dedicated to housing requirements in Vyasarpadi. This funding will cover the reconstruction of two ageing tenement buildings that are over 40 years old: the 858-unit Old Block and the 684-unit Udhaya Suriyan Nagar tenements. Additionally, a new tenement block is planned on a vacant parcel of land identified near Mullai Nagar.

To support local youth, the government will establish an Ambedkar study centre at Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College in Vyasarpadi to provide coaching for UPSC and other competitive examinations. The Public Works Department will also construct a new administrative block and an auditorium on the college campus. Sports infrastructure will be upgraded with new basketball, football, kabaddi, and volleyball courts at the college, alongside a new six-acre integrated sports complex on GNT Road and playgrounds in Sharma Nagar and Mullai Nagar.

The plan also includes a Rs 15 crore pedestrian plaza and food street on North Avenue Road, which will be the first of its kind in North Chennai. This 5,040-square-foot space will feature a pedestrian walkway with lighting and seating on one side, and a food street with around 90 shops on the other. For healthcare, a new urban community health centre will be built at Sathyamoorthy Nagar in Vyasarpadi, and a dialysis centre will be added to the existing urban primary health centre in the same area.

An additional Rs 160 crore will be spent to upgrade public utilities, including power infrastructure. While most projects are currently in the proposal stage with detailed project reports being prepared, the Chief Minister has sanctioned Rs 3 crore from his MLA Local Area Development Scheme (MLALADS) for immediate development works.
