Vyasarpadi Football Fans Gear Up For 2026 FIFA World Cup Final

Ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, residents and local footballers in Vyasarpadi, Chennai, are gearing up for the historic match. Known widely as the 'mini Brazil of Chennai', the neighborhood is preparing to host a community screening for the final, bringing together generations of passionate football players and fans.
Local residents are divided in their support for the two finalist nations. Uma Shankar, a Vyasarpadi resident who played in the Kerala Super League, is backing Spain. He explained that his support is rooted in encouraging young talents like Lamine Yamal as they compete against established legends of the game.
In contrast, Nandha Kumar, who represented India in the 2023 Intercontinental Cup, is rooting for Argentina solely to support Lionel Messi. Liza Vennilla, a former Tamil Nadu football referee, shared a similar sentiment. Vennilla, who transitioned from supporting Portugal and Brazil after they were knocked out, noted that football is a deeply ingrained family tradition in the locality. She took up the sport after watching her father play, and is now training her three-year-old daughter.
Jayaseelan, a 44-year-old autorickshaw driver and passionate football fan, explained that the sport’s popularity in Vyasarpadi is tied to the socio-economic conditions of local families. He noted that unlike other sports that require expensive equipment, football only requires a ball, making it accessible to everyone.
Local institutions have also played a significant role in nurturing this passion. Organizations like the Slum Children Sports, Talent, and Education Development Society (SC-STEDS) and Don Bosco School provide free coaching to youth. Founded in 1997 by Thangaraj and Umapathy, SC-STEDS has produced nearly a hundred national and international players while using sports to keep children in school and lower dropout rates.
Karthick Thirumalai, who represented Tamil Nadu in the Santosh Trophy, stated that football has successfully changed public perception of the Vyasarpadi community, shifting the focus from violence to athletic achievement. Like many in the neighborhood, Thirumalai and Thangaraj share a ultimate dream of seeing India qualify for the World Cup in the near future.
