The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday signed a major Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with solar energy solutions provider Vikram Solar to establish a new Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) manufacturing plant. The agreement was officially signed at the Secretariat in Chennai, marking a significant step in the state's green energy transition.

The project represents a massive investment of Rs 15,037 crore. The new manufacturing facility will be located at the SIPCOT Industrial Park in Gangaikondan, which is situated in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.

The signing ceremony took place during an event organized by the Department of Industries, Investment Promotion, and Commerce. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay was present at the event to witness the signing of the agreement.

Other high-ranking state officials also attended the ceremony at the Secretariat, including Tamil Nadu Industries Minister S Keerthana and Chief Secretary M Saikumar, along with several other government officials and corporate leaders.

Vikram Solar was represented at the event by its top leadership, including Gyanesh Chaudhary, Chairman and Managing Director; Arun Mittal, Chief Executive Officer; and Ashwini Agarwal, Capital Investment Project Director.

According to an official release, this mega project is expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities for 2,670 people in the region. The Rs 15,037 crore expansion into advanced BESS technology underscores the company's deepening commitment to the robust industrial ecosystem of Tamil Nadu and its transition toward green energy.

Vikram Solar already maintains a significant manufacturing presence within the state. The company currently operates two Solar Photovoltaic (Solar PV) module manufacturing facilities, which are located at Oragadam and Vallam. Furthermore, the company has already established an integrated manufacturing complex dedicated to solar PV cells and modules at the Gangaikondan site, where the new BESS plant will be set up.
