Vijay Film Jana Nayagan Receives A Certificate After Madras High Court Battle

The highly anticipated Tamil film 'Jana Nayagan', starring actor and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has been granted an 'A' certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) following a seven-month delay and legal battles at the Madras High Court. The certification, announced on July 9, 2026, clears the film for a likely theatrical release on July 24, 2026, across approximately 1,000 theatres in Tamil Nadu.

Directed by H Vinoth and produced by Bengaluru-based KVN Productions, 'Jana Nayagan' is widely regarded as Vijay's final cinematic outing before his full-time transition into politics. The film's path to theatres was delayed by a series of regulatory hurdles, court cases, and a major online leak.

The film was originally scheduled for release on January 9, 2026, ahead of the Pongal festival, having been submitted to the CBFC on December 19, 2025. Although the film was initially deemed suitable for a 'U/A' certificate after the filmmakers implemented suggested modifications, the process stalled when a committee member raised an internal objection, claiming certain portions could hurt public sentiments.

To resolve the impasse, KVN Productions filed a petition in the Madras High Court on January 6, 2026, seeking to expedite the certification. Following nearly a month of legal proceedings that reached the Supreme Court, the producers withdrew their petition and opted to present the film to the CBFC's revising committee instead.

During the protracted certification process, a high-definition version of the uncertified film leaked online in April. During subsequent proceedings at the Madras High Court, prosecutors revealed that the pirated copy was viewed by nearly 1.2 crore people before access was blocked. The Tamil Nadu police later arrested multiple individuals in connection with the leak, including a freelance film editor who allegedly sourced the footage from an editing facility.

With the 'A' certificate now secured, the Tamil Nadu Film Distributors' Association expects the film to screen widely. 'Jana Nayagan' features an ensemble cast including Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, and Narain, with music by Anirudh Ravichander.
