Veteran Tamil Filmmaker K. Bhagyaraj Passes Away at Apollo Hospital in Chennai

Veteran actor, writer, and director K. Bhagyaraj passed away on Saturday, June 27, 2026, after suffering a massive heart attack at Apollo Hospital in Chennai. He was widely recognized as an influential figure in Tamil cinema, celebrated for his inventive screenwriting and unique creative vision.
Bhagyaraj built an extensive body of work in Tamil cinema. Due to the novelty of his storytelling, many of his Tamil films were regularly adapted into Hindi. Director David Dhawan adapted several of his works, directing "Raja Babu" (1994) from "Raasukutti", "Andaz" (1994) from "Sundara Kandam", and "Gharwali Baharwali" (1998) from "Thaikulame Thaikulame".
In addition to writing stories that were remade by other filmmakers, Bhagyaraj directed three Hindi films himself, collaborating with prominent actors such as Amitabh Bachchan and Anil Kapoor.
His Hindi directorial debut was "Aakhree Raasta" (1986), a remake of the Tamil film "Oru Kaidhiyin Diary", which Bhagyaraj had co-written with his mentor, filmmaker Bharathiraja. The vigilante action film starred Amitabh Bachchan in a double role alongside Jaya Prada, Sridevi, and Anupam Kher. Rajesh Khanna was originally considered for the lead role but opted out due to scheduling conflicts.
In 1996, Bhagyaraj directed "Mr. Bechara", a romantic drama starring Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, and Anupam Kher, with a guest appearance by Telugu superstar Nagarjuna. The film was a remake of Bhagyaraj's own Tamil film "Veetla Visheshanga". It followed a widower who pretends to be the husband of an amnesiac woman.
His third Hindi directorial venture was "Papa The Great" (2000), remade from his 1998 Tamil film "Vaettiya Madichu Kattu". Produced by Gulshan Kumar, the film starred Krishan Kumar, Nagma, Satya Prakash, and Master Bobby, telling the story of a meek man who witnesses a murder.
