Veteran South Indian Actor Sowcar Janaki Passes Away in Chennai at 94

Veteran South Indian actor Sowcar Janaki died in Chennai on Friday following age-related ailments. She was 94 years old.

Janaki, whose career spanned more than seven decades, established herself across multiple languages from the 1950s studio-era social dramas to the middle-class films of director K Balachander. Her acting repertoire ranged from intense emotional roles to sophisticated society women, domineering wives, and comic characters.

Born in Rajahmundry in 1931, Janaki began her career as a teenager with All India Radio as an A-grade artiste. Filmmaker B N Reddy approached her with an acting offer when she was around 15, but her family opposed the profession at the time, and she was married young. She eventually entered cinema out of the necessity to earn a living, subsequently building a prolific career in South Indian cinema.

Initially regarded as Tamil cinema's "tragedy queen", Janaki later transitioned into widely recognised comic and glamorous roles. Among her prominent performances was the character of Pattu Mami in the film Ethir Neechal.

Actor Y Gee Mahendran, who shared a long personal and professional association with Janaki, remembered her as a self-made woman defined by talent, grit, and straightforwardness. He recalled how she supported him when he staged his first play and later attended his play Lakshmy Kalyana Vaibogamay, in which Janaki's granddaughter made her debut, by purchasing a regular ticket and sitting in the audience.

Mahendran also recalled visiting her Cenotaph Road residence in Chennai for regular Sunday family lunches and noted her culinary skills. He described her as an artist who moved effortlessly across varied cinematic roles while maintaining simplicity and grace in her personal life.

Janaki had been admitted to an intensive care unit during her final days, where she remained until her death on Friday.
