Velankanni Annual Feast Begins In Nagapattinam With Elaborate Arrangements

Thousands of devotees gathered at the Velankanni Church in the coastal district of Nagapattinam on Saturday for the ceremonial flag hoisting, which marked the commencement of the 11-day annual festival.

The annual feast of the renowned Our Lady of Health Basilica at Velankanni is regarded as one of Tamil Nadu's most significant religious celebrations. The festival is scheduled to be held from August 29 to September 8, 2026, drawing pilgrims from various regions across the state and beyond.

In preparation for the massive influx of pilgrims, Nagapattinam District Collector KJ Praveen Kumar outlined comprehensive administrative, transportation, and safety measures. The government will operate as many as 525 special buses connecting various destinations to the coastal town. Additionally, private bus facilities have been coordinated alongside designated parking slots to manage incoming vehicular traffic.

To assist pilgrims and resolve public concerns during the 11-day event, authorities will establish an integrated help centre supported by a dedicated toll-free number to address grievances.

Healthcare and emergency response facilities have also been deployed across key points. Special medical camps will function at seven locations throughout the festival zone. Emergency healthcare mobility will be supported by as many as 10 ambulances and three bike ambulances stationed to ensure rapid medical intervention.

Extensive safety arrangements have been put in place along the coast for devotees who visit the seashore for holy baths. The administration has stationed 12 fire and rescue vehicles, two rescue boats, and a team of diving experts, including local fishermen, directly on the beach to monitor coastal safety and respond to emergencies.
