Velachery Mall Film Event Cancelled as Heavy Crowds Cause Traffic Gridlock

City police cancelled an un-ticketed film release event featuring artist 'Hiphop Tamizha' Aadhi at Phoenix Mall in Velachery on Saturday evening after overwhelming crowds caused stampede-like conditions inside the venue and severe traffic gridlock across local roads.

Heavy traffic congestion began building near the mall from Saturday afternoon as large crowds, primarily consisting of youngsters, arrived early for the scheduled evening program. Navigating past the mall toward Guindy took over an hour by early evening, while heavy rainfall further aggravated vehicular movement across all connecting link roads.

The situation inside the venue escalated as the surging crowd became uncontrollable, prompting city police to intervene and stop the chief guest, 'Hiphop Tamizha' Aadhi, from arriving at the mall. Additional traffic personnel were immediately deployed to regulate vehicle movement and clear choke points along Velachery Main Road.

A senior police officer stated that because the function was conducted indoors, the event organizers had not sought prior permission from the traffic police. After traffic conditions deteriorated, senior officials contacted the guest and forced the organizers to cancel the program.

Local residents and commuters voiced strong frustration over the disruption. S. Nagavel, a Velachery resident who works in Vadapalani, noted that events involving Aadhi consistently draw massive turnouts and argued that police should require such film release functions to take place on open grounds instead of a mall on a narrow road. He reported that his commute to Vadapalani took more than an hour.

Online, social media users highlighted the severe traffic snarls, calling for crowd limits, advance traffic advisories, and public transit plans for large gatherings. By Sunday, traffic police equipped with patrol vehicles worked to clear remaining bottlenecks at every major junction along Velachery Main Road.
