V Yo Mahesh Appointed Head Coach of Tamil Nadu Mens Cricket Team

Former all-rounder V Yo Mahesh has been appointed as the new head coach of the Tamil Nadu men's cricket team. The 38-year-old, who recently led the state's Under-19 team, takes charge of the senior squad in Chennai with immediate plans to bring matches back to the historic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk.
Mahesh is potentially the youngest coach to lead the state's men's team. His appointment comes at a time of transition for Tamil Nadu cricket, which has seen four different coaches over the last three seasons, including Sulakshan Kulkarni, L Balaji, M Senthilnathan, and M Venkataramana.
While his current contract is for six months and one season, Mahesh aims to establish stability and build a long-term foundation. He noted that his discussions with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) president and secretary have focused on building a strong foundation for the future.
Mahesh emphasized the importance of changing the team's attitude on the field, stating that the players cannot be soft and must show up for a fight. He noted that while changing attitudes and getting player buy-in will not happen overnight, it is crucial to instil a competitive mindset.
A key priority for the new head coach is returning to play at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. The Tamil Nadu team has not played a Ranji Trophy match at Chepauk since facing Karnataka in early February 2024. Mahesh highlighted the venue's legacy, noting the importance of players experiencing a dressing room that has hosted domestic and international legends.
As a former fast bowler, Mahesh also stressed the significance of pacers taking wickets throughout the Ranji season. He stated that up-and-coming fast bowlers need the right conditions to groom them for the future. To help players succeed, Mahesh plans to focus on clear role definitions and ensuring players feel secure within the team setup.
