UWA Receives UGC Approval for Velachery Campus Ahead of October Launch

The University of Western Australia has received final approval from the University Grants Commission to establish an international branch campus at One National Park on Velachery Main Road in Chennai. Following the regulatory clearance, classes at the new facility are scheduled to commence on October 19.
The 70,000-square-foot campus will begin orientation for its first intake of students on October 5. The opening in Velachery follows the launch of UWA's Mumbai campus in September and forms part of the institution's AUD 80-million long-term investment in wholly owned campuses across India.
Academic offerings at the Chennai location will include undergraduate programmes in business management, computer science, data science, and artificial intelligence. The branch campus will also provide postgraduate degrees in information technology and business administration.
The institution stated that the campus is expected to strengthen its engagement across Tamil Nadu, focusing on technology, engineering, manufacturing, and innovation. Students attending the centre will also gain access to the university's international academic and industry networks.
UWA Vice-Chancellor Professor Amit Chakma said the final approval from the UGC allows the university to move from the planning phase to welcoming its first batch of students in Chennai. He added that the campus will bring UWA's education to a region with strong capabilities in technology and innovation.
According to the university, the establishment of the Chennai campus marks the next phase of its relationship with India, which spans more than a century.
