Two Thirumullaivoyal sub-inspectors arrested for taking ₹20,000 bribe
Two women sub-inspectors attached to the Thirumullaivoyal police station in the Avadi police commissionerate of Chennai were arrested on Wednesday for accepting a ₹20,000 bribe. The Tiruvallur unit of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) arrested sub-inspectors Amul and Bhagyalakshmi after they allegedly demanded the money from a woman who was seeking a license to operate a spa and massage parlor.
The incident began when the female complainant recently approached the Thirumullaivoyal police station. She was seeking the mandatory police license required to operate her spa and massage parlor business within the local jurisdiction of the station.
According to the DVAC, sub-inspectors Amul and Bhagyalakshmi refused to process the application without receiving a bribe. They demanded a sum of ₹20,000 from the complainant to move the licensing paperwork forward.
Instead of paying the demanded amount, the complainant decided to approach the Tiruvallur unit of the DVAC. She lodged a formal complaint detailing the bribery demand made by the two women police officers.
Upon receiving the complaint, the DVAC registered a case and devised a trap to catch the sub-inspectors. The anti-corruption team provided the complainant with currency notes that were laced with chemicals. She was instructed by the DVAC officials to hand this money over to the sub-inspectors inside the police station.
On Wednesday, the complainant went to the Thirumullaivoyal police station to deliver the money. A team of DVAC officials entered the station premises and caught sub-inspector Amul red-handed as she received the chemical-laced cash.
The DVAC team arrested both Amul and Bhagyalakshmi on corruption charges. Following their arrest, both sub-inspectors were produced before a local magistrate court in the city and were subsequently remanded in judicial custody.
