Two Arrested for Heist of Rs 3 Crore Diamonds from T Nagar Showroom Manager
The Tambaram Railway Police have arrested two members of an interstate railway theft gang in connection with the theft of diamond jewellery worth Rs 3 crore from a manager of a T Nagar jewellery showroom.
The victim, Deepak Sanchetti, 47, a resident of Vepery who works as a manager at a diamond and gold jewellery showroom in T Nagar, was travelling in an air-conditioned sleeper coach on the Ananthapuri Express on July 24. He was carrying the jewellery after meeting a customer. Shortly before the train reached Tambaram the following morning, Sanchetti discovered that the bag containing the valuables was missing and lodged a complaint with the Tambaram Railway Police.
The stolen bag contained an Apple Smart Watch, which investigators tracked to a railway section between Tiruchy and Virudhachalam. Three special teams were formed to probe the incident. After reviewing CCTV footage, passenger manifests, and mobile phone call records, police confirmed the presence of suspects on the train.
Police subsequently arrested 64-year-old Amarnath Jaiswal in Siliguri, West Bengal, with the assistance of local police. Another team arrested an associate, Rajan Kumar, in Patna, Bihar, and seized Rs 4 lakh in cash from his possession. Both accused were brought to Chennai on transit warrants and remanded in Puzhal prison after being produced before a local court.
Interrogation revealed that Jaiswal has 36 cases registered against him across multiple railway police stations. Police said the suspects stole the bag when Sanchetti left his seat to use the washroom. The accused allegedly transferred the jewellery into their own bags inside the moving train and discarded the original bag containing the smartwatch trackable device.
Investigators suspect Jaiswal contacted Rajan Kumar, who flew to Chennai, where the stolen jewels were handed over to him. Police are continuing their search for two other alleged accomplices, identified as Ranjan Kumar and Ashok Kumar, and are taking steps to obtain custody of the arrested suspects to recover the remaining Rs 3 crore worth of jewellery.
