Track Crack Near Nungambakkam Causes Delays on Tambaram-Beach Line

Hundreds of suburban train commuters on the Tambaram-Beach section faced significant hardship on Tuesday morning, July 7, 2026, after a crack was discovered in the railway track near the Nungambakkam railway station. The track defect forced Southern Railway to implement speed restrictions, causing major delays during the peak morning rush hour.

According to a senior official of Southern Railway, the crack in the railway track near the Nungambakkam railway station was first discovered by the maintenance staff. The issue was immediately notified to the railway authorities, and the maintenance staff repaired the crack by welding the affected portion of the track.

Even though the temporary welding repair was completed, Southern Railway officials took the safety of the commuters into consideration. Consequently, loco drivers were ordered to operate the suburban trains at a slow speed through the repaired section of the track.

The speed restrictions on this highly populated suburban section resulted in trains being operated at a slow speed on both sides of the line. This slow movement led to consecutive delays for multiple services along the Tambaram-Beach route.

The disruption caused difficulties for hundreds of office-goers who depend on the suburban network to reach their workplaces. S. Joshua, a commuter who boarded a train from Sanatorium, explained that several trains are normally packed during the morning rush hour. He stated that the slow movement of the suburban trains resulted in a delay of more than 30 minutes for him to reach his destination at the Egmore railway station.

While commuters faced delays of more than 30 minutes during their morning commute, Southern Railway officials confirmed that no train services were cancelled due to the track issue.
